Agency: Crown Land Allocation
File: #2411959

Sept 19, 2017

Location: Carey Island
Area (Hectares): .472 ha +-

Legal Description: PARCEL IN THE VICINITY OF THE FRASER RIVER, TW THAT PART OF RW OVER UNSURVEYED CROWN FS BEING PART OF NELSON SLOUGH, AS SHOWN ON PLAN 52193 FILED IN NEW WEST. LTO TOGETHER WITH THAT PART OF RW OVER UCL AND OVER UCF PART OF THE BED OF GREYELL CHANNEL, AS SHOWN ON PLAN 52391 FILED IN VICTORIA LTO.

Carey Island Farms Ltd. propose to construct an access bridge to Carey Island. The access bridge includes a bridge that crosses Greyell Slough, a jump span to cross an adjacent dry side channel and the filling in of a low lying area for the east abutment. Carey Island is part of the Agricultural Land
Reserve (ALR) and the Carey Island Farms Ltd own land on Carey Island which they intend the farm.
The access bridge will allow them to farm the land and bring their merchandise to market.
The new bridge will span approximately 100 m over Greyell Slough. Design factors and cost considerations will require two in river bridge piers consisting of four piles per pier to support the wide span and an upland pier at the north east end. A 25 m jump span will be constructed at the north east end of the bridge to cross a dry side channel located on the island. Finally a low lying area will be filled in to accommodate the east abutment. A bridge supported on piles requires a Water Sustainability Act (WSA) approval per Part 11 WSA.
